ISLAND LAKE CAMP
Duties
Duties: I was the department head of the skatepark in Island Lake camp, I opened the park in the morning and was responsible for the running of skateboarding and rollerblading classes, as well as making sure the environment was safe for the campers to use.
The campers were anywhere from 10 – 17 years old, and I ensured they all wore protective gear whilst in the skatepark. I managed a team of two staff, ensured the skate shop was fully stocked up with the equipment needed. Once a week I supervised the cambers bunks and ensured that their behaviour was respectful and mannerly, before reporting to the manager.
A typical day at work for me would begin at 8.30AM where I would make my way to the skatepark to and ensure the area is clear of all obstacles, as my first class of the morning started at 9.00AM.
Classes were an hour long, and with the help of two members of staff I would ensure all campers were wearing protective gear prior to entering the skatepark. I then sent my members of staff to assist campers and help them rollerblade and skateboard. At 10 minutes to the hour, I would call ‘Pads off’ which is when all campers must remove their protective gear and put them back in the skate shop. This gave time the rotation of classes and ensured that every camper was ready to go to their next activity.
I ran 6 classes per day, finishing up at 6pm where I would then clear the park and put any loose belongings in a lost and found box before locking up the skate shop – where all the equipment is stored. I was staying On – site, working 6 days a week with one day a week off where I was able to leave camp and explore nearby towns.
